Jacob`s Creek - It`s Friday Night!

Image
In the glass tonight is a 2005 Jacob`s Creek Shiraz Cabernet....."Medium bodied blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon boasts ripe plum and berry fruit flavors, soft tannins and subtle oak." Nice! A great red wine selection. I see why Adrien likes this Aussie winemaker`s product. Looking forward to a morning at the gym. Hope to make the sign up queue for spin class for a good old fashioned hammerfest. Core and lower body work afterwards should round out my return from my lack of exercise wilderness. Back to hockey on Sunday as well to finish out the weekend. Hopefully the body responds well....so far so good. Cheers! Geo

Dev Gets His Wings Back!

Been feeling prime the last couple days.....basically pain and stiffness free so tonight`s visit to my chiropractor gave me the green light to return to my usual routine. Nice! To quote Aerosmith I`m "back in the saddle again!". I do have a follow up appointment next Thursday to evaluate my return to activity so I put it to the test almost immediately. Just so happens I had my fully stocked gym bag in the car and my return from the doctor`s office just happened to pass Nubody`s.(wink) Got in a 45 minute spin class which felt awesome, albeit at a less than normal effort. It`s been two weeks since I have done anything so I`m gonna ease myself back into form.I set the bar a little higher than usual and didn`t hammer the sprints to be kind to my neck and shoulder. Managed to get in some core work afterwards but limited it to floor work...no Swiss or medicine ball. Still felt wonderful Neck and shoulder feel a little tight tonight but managable. I`ll throw some ice on it and se

Thanks to the generosity of Eric W I have a new addition of my bike stable. I picked up my future time trial bike on Saturday and have begun the transformation to ITT specific road rocket. After a good cleaning I have added the time trial bullhorn, stem, aerobars and aero brakes. I also mounted spare tires on my spare wheelset for testing purposes. It was originally set up with Shimano 8 speed but I will switch it all over to Shimano 9 speed. I already have the Dura Ace 9 speed bar end shifters, my wheelsets all have 9 speed rear cassettes and I have a brand new Ultegra 9 speed crankset. To complete the transformation I will need to purchase a 9 speed rear derailleur, chain and MTB brake cables to fit the aero brake levers. Needless to say I`m quite pleased to have a time trial specific bike available. I also spied a set of Maxxis road tires online that have a orange stripe which will compliment the frame paint quite nicely. If I could only find a nice affordable set of aero wheels I`

Saturday Morning - A Gym Wall Flower.

As promised I headed to Nubody`s in the morning to attempt the spin class. Been a week since I did any physical activity and I needed an adreneline boost. I ended up with a bike but gave it up to Carole, a club mate ay BPCC. I planned on doing an easy spin but know myself too well. I would hammer the class as usual and end up making my shoulder/neck miserable. Went in to do some core work and the little I did on the Swiss ball and floor has caused a return to some tension to my upper body. Skipping the spin class was,in hinesight,a smart choice. While on the subject I think most of my issues are related to the ergonomics of my work station. After my second session with the doc I got an ergonomic assessment booklet from my supervisor and quickly realized how wrong my station was; my chair was too low, the monitor to high and my mouse at the wrong elevation. Having fixed the first two I am getting a keyboard tray installed that will put the mouse/keyboard in the proper positioning. Wh

Wine For The Soul - It`s Friday Night.

Yes indeed.....it`s Friday night. In the glass(early)tonight is Jost`s 2006 Marechal Foch. One of my favs..."a dry, well balanced wine with a fruity bouquet." Nothing fancy, smancy here although it did win the gold medal at the 2006 Taster`s Guild Competition. For a Nova Scotian wine this just tastes good and is a good value. I will drink the whole bottle....lol. Why will I drink the whole bottle you ask? Good question. After a week of NO EXERCISE I`m feeling rather uninspired and cranky. I`m in need of a serious endorphin rush but my continuing back/neck/shoulder issues mean I need to avoid strenuous activity. Rats! I have a third session with my chiro on Monday so have bowed out of hockey on Sunday. That said I may well head to the gym tomorrow morning and do the spin class, albeit with the bar higher than usual to prevent any stress to the body. Gotta say I am feeling much better.....between the sessions and tweaking my work space ergonomics(chair height,PC positioning)I d

....albeit temporarily. Finally got in to see my sport chiropractor about the stiffness and pain in my neck, shoulder and upper back. Rotator/shoulder socket are good.Neck is OK. In layman`s terms it seems a couple upper ribs are the problem, specifically where they join the spinal column. The result is stiffness/pain that radiates upwards along my spine into my neck and across my inner shoulder. It could be caused by several reasons including goaltending and strength training regimens but has been a long standing problem. Usually I just work through the discomfort(therein lies the problem)but trying to break up ice with a shovel on the driveway at Christmas might have been the straw that broke the camel`s(Devinci`s)back. The good news is that I do have "good back musculature" that has prevented the symptoms getting any worse so now it`s a case of treating the congested "knot" Had my first treatment today and I am scheduled back on Thursday for round two. I fel

Devinci With An Italian Flare - It`s Friday Night!

Happy Friday! In the glass tonight is a 2006 Lamberti Santepietre Pinot Grigio Chardonnay...."a fresh and fragrant white wine...". Very refreshing and fitting considering my Selle Italia cycling jersey arrived in the mail today. So for my photo op I`m drinking Italian white wine while wearing an Italian cycling jersey. I`m such a poser.(wink) Customer appreciation night at the bike shop is on the 29th, the same day as the yearly bonus so it`s looking good for the purchase of a time trial specific helmet....or maybe a new pair of cycling shoes. I`m starting to get that yearning....as March approaches so does the anticipation for Spring and the 2008 cycling season. Went to the gym last night and my neck/shoulder is just miserable today.Fortunately I have an appointment with my chiropractor on Monday so here`s hoping he can "snap" me into some semblance of shape. Off to the gym in the AM, shoulder be damned. This new jersey was just a little snug so I now have a tem

Saturday Morning Run

Yes.....that`s correct. I awoke late and debated the merits of getting up on a dark, rainswept morning to head to Nubody`s for my usual offseason spin class. Lately it`s been a crush to even get a bike in the eighteen bike session as it is the most popular class offered in the local gym. Needless to say my reluctance to hover about like a turkey vulture awaiting the eventual rush to queue up for the sign-in sheet does not help my early morning motivations nor is it a wise choice of exercise time management. Guilt is a wonderful thing and since Saturday morning is my premier training time I got up and headed to my impending workout. Arriving at 9AM there was no doubt the spin class was full so I was prepared to run. I did a 2.3 mile run averaging between 5.5 - 6.5 mph with an average incline of 1-1.5. Following that I opted to do one minute intervals at 8mph with an active recovery at 4 - 5.5 mph for the same length of time....one minute. After six intervals I did a three minute hill c

That`s right.....it`s Friday Night! Geo`s wine indulgence is an Italian offering with good value and quality in mind. A two litre jug with a price point around $18 CDN you can`t go wrong. Generally I am reluctant to buy the big bottles hence the temptation to drink the whole bottle. Regardless of my postings on exercise and diet I am a creature of opportunity and will over indulge if given the chance. That said it is a nice wine...."a product of the famous Sangiovese grape resulting in a dry, rich, full bodied wine with delicate aroma...." I actually opened it last night as my spouse was off work and we shared a glass(or two)together for a change. A couple more tonight, some for Saturday and, perhaps,a glass or two during the Superbowl. Found out tonight that my grandmother was taken to the hospital with low blood pressure. Hopefully she will be OK. Get well soon Nannie. Usual gym routine for Saturday. It was lovely Spring like weather the last couple days but the weekend l
