Geo`s Gone Paleo!

Update - Effective today I am now grain and diary free. One of my concerns was how Paleo nutrition would affect my athletic endeavors. Having read Paleo Diet for Athletes last week I have begun to incorporate some of the principles into my pre and post exercise nutrition. The results so far have surpassed my expectations. My running has improved - stamina seems unchanged and I have begun hill intervals this week to help develop some sprint power. I`m playing some of the best goaltending to date in ballhockey and my efforts outside of the pipes is also getting better. It has been years since I played out as the impact of start/stopping running wreaked havoc on my lower back.Not only am I back playing painfree but my endurance and strength on the ball is awesome. I`m sure the gains I`m seeing in running and ballhockey is a direct correlation to my continued weight loss. Usually in winter I gain weight but this year it is the opposite effect. Paleo Diet For Athletes

Ordered a copy which arrived yesterday. Chock full of useful imformation and quite easy to read and understand. You do not require a PHD to understand the concepts.(wink). Update Breads and Grains - Yesterday was also the first day where I went completely gluten free. Typically I would have a slice or two of whole wheat toast with my morning eggs but decided to go without. Processed Foods - I have also completely eliminated processed foods successfully from my diet. That was not a stretch as I have been weaning myself off of fake foods for some time. Dairy - Work in progress. Cheese has always been a favorite but I have managed to avoid any for a couple days. Every now and then I have an ounce or two usually when I am preparing a meal for the kids. A little shredded Swiss on a spinach salad is so good too. Other than that I take a little coffee cream in my java or black tea. I have rediscovered Earl Grey tea and I enjoy it black.I usually limit my coffee(with cream)intake to a

A Pillar Of Salt!

I`ve come to the conclusion that the modern Western diet is built upon a pillar of salt. Once I stumbled upon the Paleo Diet and noticed that I had essentially adopted some of the basic nutritional concepts as part of my ongoing attempts to eat better I realized that salt is everywhere. Who knew? Yes I was aware that sodium content is listed on nutritional labels but like the proverbial "forest for the trees" I never paid much attention. There was always the total carbs and fat percentages to focus upon. If anything comes out of my experiment with the Paleo Diet it will be a newfound respect(fear)of processed foods and the substantial amount of sodium hidden within our foodstuffs. I also have developed a new appreciation for herbs and how food can be prepared without salt by using the flavors found in nature. That said I must draw compromises and find it difficult to completely rule out sodium. There are some staples to my diet that have salt but are at low levels. Cann

If you scroll through my blog postings you will see that I have endeavored to improve my athletic performance,achieve overall health and reach a desirable(competitive)body weight over the course of the last several years. It`s been a journey of education and common sense but I have managed to improve my diet following the premises of portion control,avoiding the "whites"(rices, flours and sugars),acknowledging the GI index and limiting/avoiding processed foods.Often it was a case of just doing what feels right and using biofeedback as a gauge of what works for me. Weight loss has always been elusive although I feel better with each change to my diet and my athletic ability has improved. Nagging ailments have deminished and,between weight control and core strength routines I have said goodbye to my debilitating lower back issues.
