2012 Halifax Criterium

Image
On a perfect sunny day I managed to catch the 2012 running of the Halifax Criterium hosted by the Bicycles Plus Cycling Club. Raced upon the flat, wide boulevards surrounding the Halifax Commons in conjunction with HRM Bike Week it is a spectator friendly super criterium style of race. I will admit that I was tempted to come out of retirement and compete especially when KB and EW both opted to take part in the event. I am not training but the lack of hills means I probably could have done OK as the flatness of the course would have been somewhat forgiving. Alas - I decided this winter that 2012 would be a recovery year so I decided to keep that promise to myself and just cheer on the racers and get some video. Special mention to CF and DM who are relocating to England tomorrow. There is no doubt BPCC will be a different entity without their influence and dedication. I just hope us remaining members can carry the torch. Touching moment today when BM, owner of Bicyles Plus, an

Georgie Hood or Blind Random Luck

Got out for some target practice tonight to end off a glorious long weekend with nothing but the best summer like weather. Within a few moments I actually managed to do this....... What are the odds of splitting an arrow from from about 17 yards and I am far from any kind of "Robin Hood" skilled archer. Just the opposite as I am still still working on my form having recently adopted a three fingers under pull. The beotch of it all was the split arrow was brand spanking new right out of my reserve box. Thats that black cloud of misfortune that usually follows me around showing up again. Back to the bow with my three remaining arrows thinking the odds of that happening again are near impossible when I loose the third arrow followed thereafter by the sound of bamboo on bamboo. No real worries on my part as I walk to retrieve the arrows untill I saw this. No frigging way! Believe it or not I split two arrows within 10 minutes of shooting. I'm not that good of an

Modoc Style Longbow

Image
Last week I decided to refinish my Modoc style longbow in a more rustic darker mahogany stain. It had arrived from the bowyer - KP Archery - as an unfinished hickory bow to which I simply added a clearcoat. So today I opted to take the new look long bow out for some shooting. Since I gave blood this morning I opted out of the usual club ride but wanted to do something on this sunny May 19th. I will admit my longbow has not seen much use of late and has played second fiddle to the sexier Chinese recurve I picked up last winter. Know what? It's just basically a simple shelfless bow but shoots great. I kinda forgot how much I enjoy shooting it. I'm also digging the darker rustic look of the stain. Grip is made from tennis racket wrap - synthetic but leather like in appearance and function. The bow is a great value especially for anyone wanting to get into traditional archery. http://stores.ebay.ca/KP-Archery?_trksid=p4340.l2563

Three Fingers Below

After a leg burner of a Saturday club ride - my first hard effort on the road bike in 2012 I opted out of cycling on Sunday. The body felt good as did the legs but I am playing nets tonight in my ECBHL game and figured another fast ride around Cow Bay probably was not a good idea, especially considering my neck issues of late. That said I awoke to an absolutely lovely May day complete with blue skies and sunshine. I considered heading out to Falmouth and watch the first road race on the BNS schedule but ended up heading into the woods for some archery practice. If there is one sport that requires hours of repetition it is traditional archery.Practice does make perfect when shooting a bow especially if it is instinctive shooting. It can be frustrating at times; some days it seems easy and other days it is not. So today I tried an experiment. I have always used a split finger grip with one finger above the nock and two fingers below. I began shooting that way this morning
