Wentworth Road Race - In Photos.

Image
As a marshall I was stationed at the end of a single lane bridge to stop traffic when the racers were approaching from a steep downhill. Last thing we wanted was a vehicle and peleton all sharing the same bridge space. As a result my pics are similar as my ability to move about was mitigated by safety concerns. Geo

Wentworth - Last Road Race of the 2007 Season.

Hosted by BPCC of course. We have the hammer with the last race a pivotal one in which the Cat point champs will be crowned. With the exception of Open Women`s I believe all the rest will come down to the Wentworth placings to determine the point series podium placings. Since I have only been on the bike twice in 2 weeks I will work the event;initially at registration then as a marshall or wheel car driver. I`m taking my camera gear so, hopefully, I will be able to grab some shots. If we get a last minute influx of volunteers then I should have some good pics to post. The weather looks prime for tomorrow and the course challenging with rolling hills and some steep ascents in the Wentworth valley. Stay tuned! Geo

Fall Of My Discontent - Out With A Whimper But Hope Runs Eternal

After Chelsea did an endo into the table on Friday night that required five stitches adjacent her left eye I opted out of Saturday`s club ride. Mon headed to work at 8am and I didn`t have the heart to wake my daughter to check on her before I left. I did manage a workout though......after she awoke and was OK I headed to the gym for a spirited hour of spinning, a mile run on the treadmill and some core/ab work. It doesn`t negate the fact it`s been about 2 weeks since I was on the bike and the Wentworth race is on the 30th. It is the last race on the BNS road series schedule which is being hosted by us(BPCC)and if we didn`t need additional marshalls on the course I was considering racing. After missing today`s fast training ride I`ve decided that my competitive season is over......it`s been a challenge to find saddle time to just maintain my club level fitness let alone any semblance of racing form. (sigh) Out with a whimper! The 2007 season started with such promise only to end with d

Happy Friday! No wine tonight as I was craving caesars all day so I stopped at the NSLC on the way home for some vodka to go with the lime, Clamato juice, celery stalks and rim spice I picked up at the market. I guess it was a consolation prize for not taking part in the ride for juvenile diabetes today in perfect weather that left Halifax for an across Canada ride. The premise being that a group of four riders would cross our nation in 100KM legs with the support of local riders. It started today with the first rider dipping his wheel in the waters of Halifax harbour before heading out to Truro. Lots of media coverage, including Discovery Channel and the acknowledgement from Guiness that this was a bid to break a world`s record. Unfortunately our club was not interested in partaking in a great charitable event even though the 100KM ride at a 30Kkph average was well within the abilities of many riders.Sad! Not only was it a great cause but was a high profile event to show the colors

Inspiring Tale of Determination- Race Recap

Image
Got an email from my dental hygienist(lets call her S) who happens to be a triathlete.Seems she was recently in Ontario at an event and, at my request, filed a post race report cause lately I live my "racing" life vicariously through others....but I digress. Things didn`t go well as S crashed on the cycling leg, and though in some discomfort, soldiered on in the race. She was feeling some pain in her shoulder but said it wasn`t too bad while in the aerobars. After the transition to the run her shoulder/arm was causing some discomfort so one of the race volunteers jury rigged a sling(from a garbage bag)and she was able to finish the triathlon. After driving back to Halifax and a visit to the doctor`s it was determined she had actually broken her clavicle. Wow.........early into the bike portion of a triathlon you crash and break a bone yet find the fortitude/determination to finish the event.Way to go S!Being a champion does not always mean finishing on the podium.Well done!

Promises....A Precautionary Tale.

So........back in the Spring Joshua was not putting in the effort required for French and another Health "type" class with only C averages. He wanted a new Nintendo Wii so the deal struck was if he carried at least a B average in all classes I would consider purchasing the latest Nintendo product. As the school year neared completion I really didn`t want to fork out coin on another video game so, thinking I got the edge, I haggled a new deal that I would get high speed internet so he wouldn`t have to live with the shame of being stuck in the dialup "90`s". Needless to say I was feeling quite smug, thinking I had saved coin. High speed internet would probably be cheaper than dialup once I bundled it with local and long distance phone service.I was secure in my promise. I quickly found out my old PC had no ethernet card, and to my immortal stupidity, not enough memory to support high speed. The cost to upgrade made a new computer purchase the only logical decision.
