Retail Therapy, Gym Work and Geo`s Fav Pics Part 4

Image
Nice! Customer apreciation night at the shop last night. Lots of fun with good company, food, music and great deals on bike gear. Nothing like some retail therapy to chase away the late winter blues. Ended up getting a new computer, new cleats for my Keo pedals and another lid. A Bell Sweep in CSC colors. Not only will it be a perfect match to my CSC jersey but also matches my Devinci kit.(see pic) Got to the gym tonight for an extended workout. Began with core work using the Swiss ball and medicine ball followed by a 45 minute spin class then ended with an upper and lower body weight workout. Feels awesome. OK.......start line at 2005 Halifax Crit. Master A/B/C and Senior 4. I was just beside the scaffolding on which stood the commissar who was adressing the riders prior to the start. Geo

Masi Modello Delle Venezie - Geo`s Friday Night Selection

Image
Masi Rocks! A dry white that, like the red,is also "quaffable". "...A rich, fruity and very elegant wine, an ideal apertif...." Thanks to Adrien who suggested the Masi`s......THANK YOU! Delicious. So.....my Friday night wine notwithstanding I have taken another nutritional step forward. I purchased 100% buckwheat flour and brown rice flour and have incorporated both into my diet.Add pure Canuck maple syrup for some awesome buckwheat pancakes. Who knew? I have been a casual green tea fan for several years but Gerard Walsh mentioned how his brother dropped lots of weight and his only lifestyle change was his switch to green tea. So I did some research and it seems men who drank a "X" amount of green tea daily DID realize a substantial drop in body fat, along with all the other benefits associated with green tea. Add to it all a bowl full of assorted nuts;walnuts, almonds, filberts and pecans(that are all surprisingly cheap)in their shells(au natural) and my swi

Geo`s Favorite Cycling Pics Part 3 - Sunday Night Edition.

Whew..........busy day today. Got in some core strength work before the spin class in the AM and played my usual afternoon ball hockey. I played well but ended up losing both games. Alas....such is life. The temps were nice today.......just around 0C and sunny. Hmmm......could Spring be just around the corner? Gets me thinking about balmy cycling weather and that is a perfect segue to my special Sunday night edition of pictures. These were taken in the summer of 2006 at the Cyclesmith Tuesday night Crit series....a great event held in the abandoned Shannon Park, a former military housing park. It will eventually be the site of a new stadium for the HRM. Gerard drafting the mystery gal - a strong rider and at the front for most of the race. Robert drafting teammate Jeanne, who looked like she was having a blast if the smile is any indication. Robert taking the inside line heading into the second corner.I was focused upon the mystery gal when Bobbie entered the frame. I didn`t actual

Gabe, Retro Jerseys and a 2004 Nottage Hill Merlot

Image
"In just a few minutes Gabe and I will go to work together for the last time...I'm going to miss the tender way he put his chin on the bed of the patients so they could stroke his head while they told me of special dogs they have had.... I can think of no better way to ease the burden of our parting than to know his love, his joy, his gentle sweet nature changed the world...." Kay S Cyclesmith,a local bike shop, are changing their team kit for 2007. Wow....kinda a retro look. I like it. I look forward to seeing it at the races this year. Whatcha think Steve.......you like? Friday night.Tonights selection is Hardy`s Nottage Hill, a 2004 Australian Merlot. So to celebrate my sisters relocation to Aussieland,Gabe`s graduation and the spirit of Applegirl`s dedication in training the medical assist dogs considering the inherent heartbreak that comes with each parting I say, albeit with some sadness, "Cheers. Well done

Geo`s Favorites Cycling Pics - Part 2

Riverport Road Race June 2005. I cracked the frame of my bike during the Truro crit in May and was bikeless for my favorite race of the schedule. I showed up with my camera to snap some shots of the race but was conscripted to work the feed zone for Karen and Cynthia. In two consecutive laps I was unable to get Karen any bottles as our exchanges went South each time. I was feeling rather pathetic. On the third lap I knew Cynthia would need some water and was feeling the pressure when, at the last moment, Mrs. Ju took the bottle from me with a look of motherly concern for my inexperience at feeding cyclists going by at 30kph. Cynthia was looking for me in the feedzone and didn`t notice Mrs Ju calling her name so at the last minute Jeanne`s mom sprinted along side Cynthia and got her attention and sucessfully made the exchange. While this was happening I snapped the shot. I especially like the expression of the girl over Cynthia`s shoulder. Priceless! Geo

Cycling the Alps

Image
The presentation last night at the LBS about Mr. Atwood`s recent cycling trip to Europe was excellent. An insider`s view of how to do a cycling vacation to the Alps. The pics were spectacular. Kinda neat to see the guys and the familiar kit of Sealevel Cycling, whom I compete against in the BNS road race schedule,on the roads visited by the Tour.(picture compliments of Sealevel Cycling Club) Ball hockey went well on Sunday. Our side was without a spare for the first 30 minutes but still managed to win the first match 10 - 7. We then fell behind 5 - 1 in the second game and also lost our best player who had to leave early. That said the lads pulled together,in spite of having no spare, and scored a couple timely goals. It was gut check time for me as I decided I would "shut the door" and give the guys the chance to get back in the game. We ended up winning 8 - 6 as time ran out and it was a very satisfying victory. I gave up only a single goal after Shaun left.Overall I was so

Geo`s Favorite Cycling Photos....Part 1

In the winter it is tough to find blog fodder. Bear with me and my ramblings but in the meantime I will periodically post up some of my personal photos shot either on the bike or as a spectator. I did get to the gym this morning and managed to get in some great core work using both the Swiss ball and medicine ball. I also attended the one hour spin class for a rousing indoor cycling session. Afterwards I got out to the shop to sign up for tomorrow`s meet and greet with Yarmouth`s Sealevel Cycling`s Jimmie Atwood, who will do a presentation on his cycling trip to Europe/Alps back in October 2006. The photos are awesome. I look forward to hearing about the details. If you wanna see some cool pics check out the site....... www.sealevelracing.net Ran into some of the lads returning from a brisk February ride(yikes), had some java and talked about training, the coming race season and, of course, bike gear. Kris actually shattered his chain(3 month old Dura Ace)stomping out a climb but manag

Valencia Castillo Murviedro - Friday Night`s Selection

" A wine of strong Mediterranean character is a blend of carefully selected grapes from local(Spain) varieties Monastrell,Tempranillo and Bobal..." Once again aspecial weekend selection by the NSLC kiosk at the market. In my plebian tastes I find it a decent wine, in fact, I enjoy it enough I think I will purchase another bottle for the wine rack. The 2007 club kit order lineup was released today. Whooohooo.....I`m all over the men`s short sleeve full zip jersey. Hmmmm.....a club skinsuit for time trials would be awesome as well. Anyway....see the pic of the long sleeve full zip I picked up last year. Full zip jerseys rock! Geo

Kumite

Image
Today was the first Saturday in forever that I didn`t train...either on the bike or in the gym. Why? Josh had his first Kumite class......where the kids actually spar against each other in a competition style practice. Ended up costing me near $100 dollars to purchase him gloves, groin protector and mouthguard but methinks it is worth every penny if it keeps him interested in karate. He a meek kid and I`ve questioned his ability to be agressive but he did get into the competition and even managed a discreet arm pump in response to scoring a high kick for 3 points. There is a club tournament in a couple weeks so he is game to compete. I`ll strap on my hockey chest protector and become his punching bag to help him work on his combos in the meantime. Back to the gym in the AM for spin then off to hockey in the afternoon. Geo.
