Friday Night Wine - 2005 Masi Bonacosta

Image
"It is warm, like a friends house." E Hemmingway It`s Friday night which means another Friday Night Wine review. Tonights selection is a 2005 Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella. I enjoy the Masi wines thus far and the Bonacosta is no exception. A modern styled wine...." from traditional Veronese grape varieties(Corvina,Rondinella and Molinara)it goes well with many dishes....delicious with pasta." It has been a busy week at work so I`m quite happy to end it with a pasta meal and a glass(or two)of red wine. The Vanier Cup is due up shortly so I intend to hunker down and cheer for the local varsity team from SMU. It was a good training week considering my usual domestic obligations. Josh was feeling ill so we opted out of karate which enabled me to get in another gym night. After a moderate paced 1.5 mile run I decided to "shock" the body by mixing up my routine. I focused exclusively on my pecs(chest)and worked them to failure with a combinati...

Blustery Club Ride, Huskies and Corned Beef.

Got out this morning for a chilly, blustery club ride in windy 2C(-4 with windchill). The winds were swirling so we had head, tail and cross winds depending on the direction we rode. The return from Laurie Park was nasty with primarily head winds, especially on Rockey Lake road. I rode with an intermediate/fast group and we set a nice tempo/average speed despite the wind. Everyone rode well and it was quite the leg burner for this time of year. I`m feeling real good on the bike as of late and my climb over the Fall River hill was my best of the season. Home to see the SMU huskies dominate the squad from Laval. SMU was up by 3 scores late in the 4th quarter so I assume they are off to the Vanier Cup in Toronto. I missed the last of the game as I needed to prepare supper........a traditional Nova Scotian blustery Fall day meal......corned beef and cabbage complete with potatoes and turnip.MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Gonna pick up some cranberry juice to complement the Wyborowa vodka I purchas...

An Old Friend....The Water Of Life.

Heading home from a busy week at work I decided I would pick up a bottle of wine for my typical Friday night "wine down".LOL. Having picked up a bottle of Masi I strolled through the NSLC only to see an old friend in the Vodka aisle. Delisted several years ago I saw that Wyborowa(vee-bo-ro-va)was back in Nova Scotia to my delight. Made with 100% Polish rye grain it delivers..."a natural sweetness, silky texture and balanced character." It is by far my favorite hard spirit so I returned my Italian mistress to the Italian wine section in favor of my new found Polish princess.(wink) I believe the literal translation of Vodka is "the water of life." Cheers! Geo

Saturday Wine,Q-Ray and November Snow

Yikes! Perhaps the weather guys are right. After the remnants of Hurricane Noel last weekend it was suggested that the remaining season in the Atlantic will be turbulent and stormy. Tonight we got another "weather bomb" as the wind has come up with snow. Snow! Add to that it`s thundering complete with lightning. It`s surreal. The weather notwithstanding I did manage to get in the club ride today. The temps were around -4 with windchill but it wasn`t too bad. I layered properly so felt OK. I should have worn my neoprene shoe covers as my toes were cold at the end of a brisk 45k ride. I rode with the second group on the route comprised of intermediate/fast riders. I ended up with a 31.9 kph average which isn`t too bad considering my saddle time has been sparse recently. We had a good group with Rob his normal powerhouse self and Kaarin who has made tremendous gains this season. Nice. The legs felt strong. My legs have felt strong on my last couple runs as well.My gym work see...
