Investing in the Road

Monday after a dreadfully wet and rainy weekend...ugh! No bike time for this dude. Managed to get in an intense spin class on Saturday and some weights on Sunday but with the IG Triathlon on Sunday, July 2 I need to get back in the saddle. Still cloudy outside but at least it is a little brighter. Will I get a chance to get out riding tonight? If not there is the Monday night spin and Cynthia`s class is darn intense. Unless, of course, Josh decides to go to Karate tonight. The BNS road points series is now updated and I`m currently sitting in 16th place out of a field of 24 Master B licensed riders. My focus now is to get the bike leg of the IG Triathlon team event in the books. Immediately after that event the following weekend is the start of Superweek.....the Wolfville race on July 8 and the Halifax crit on the 9th. The Wolfville course is the hardest in the series, with some nasty climbs and rough pavement. I`m focusing on the crit so may not do Wolfville...I`m not a climber and

Out with a whisper or with a roar! Riverport update.

The provincial road race was today in 26C sunny weather. The only drawback was a stiff cross/headwind for 3/4 of the rolling hills course. In a group it was managable but alone it was evil. My game plan heading into the race was too play it safe and try to hang with the pack, dependant upon keeping in touch on the only real challenging climb on the course. At the line it became obvious that we had a several club riders in the Masters B/C cat with at least four potential podium finishers. We were in the ideal situation to try and control the race. Five kilometres into the race a couple of our riders started attacking off the front and mixing things up. Several others(including me) moved to the front of the peleton of about 40 riders and continued to try attack and block strategies. Generally things stayed together until the first and only big climb. As usual the climb was the signal for the guys to hammer and try to break apart the group. Not only did I manage to hold on to the lead

The Road to Riverport

Four days and counting till the Provincial road race in Riverport. The forecast is predicting a hot and sunny weekend so if it holds true it will be ideal conditions. The course is a 28K loop of rolling hills with only one moderate climb but the stretch along the LaHave river can have some nasty head/cross winds. The Master B Cat does 3 laps. This year`s race is the Provincial championship so on the line for the winners of each Cat are official Nova Scotian champion jerseys.(see pic....women`s road and ITT champs from 2005.) I missed out on last year`s race due to a cracked bottom bracket but was there to grab some photo`s of the squad. My fav......Mrs. Ju in the feedzone handing off a bottle to Cynthia. Priceless! Geo

Happy Monday!

Say What! Monday and the sunshine returned....awesome! I took a vacation day and headed off to the spin class at the gym. Got in an intense 45 minute spin highlighted with some sprints, hill climbs and some core strength work. After lunch I drove off to Dartmouth to preride the IG triathlon cycling route. I worked pretty hard over the length of the 20 K course. Using Mike`s time and average speed from last year as a benchmark I was curious to see how today`s ride stacked up. I had to substantially slow at a stop sign and a set of lights(trying to time the green)but still managed to pull of about a 36.8 minute ride with an average speed of 33.3 KPH. Not bad....in fact I was quite happy with that time considering I was not on a closed course and was within seconds of Mike`s time. In a few moments I`ll take Josh to karate and while he is in class I`ll cycle the hills of Purcell`s Cove to round out a good sunny training day with some serious hill climbs. Happy Monday indeed! Countdown!

OK....June is here and so is the awful weather! Been raining for all of June and the forecast for this weekend is.....wait for it.........rain! The good news is the Provincial road race is on the 18th. What is the chance of having rain wash out 3 weekends in a row? The bad news is I can`t seem to get any saddle time. I know....a feeble excuse not to train in the rain. If anything it is good preparation for potential lousy conditions at the start line. It`s just the two times I crashed my bike were both in wet conditions so I`m just a little timid.Add to that the misery of peering out of rain fogged glasses or having my contacts float on my eyeballs....what a bizarre feeling that is. You 20/20 visioned folk don`t know how lucky you are. I also got recruited to ride the bike leg of a team triathlon event on July 2nd. The cycling portion is a 20K rolling hill sprint....10K out and 10 K back through Dartmouth. I looked up the results of Team Biome from the 2005 Investor`s Group Triathl
