Missed Wolfville Roubaix But Suffered Regardless

Image
Turns out I could have made the (unsanctioned) Wolfville Roubaix race today but was unable to arrange a drive to the Annapolis valley. The unofficial race is about 70 k with half the distance on dirt roads between farmer`s fields. I was clear to ride the event but needed to car pool but there did not appear to be any opportunities. Thanks to Art and Jose for offering an alternative ride Sunday afternoon that came complete with lots of hills and a full measure of suffering. We headed out towards Fall River then rode through Capiliano(SP?)Estates, a second hilly subdivision further along Beaverbank road then out on Beaverbank itself. The section we rode was part of the notorious "killer loop" Sweet Mother of God it had to be the toughest section of road I`ve had the pleasure to ride. On the way out it was predominately uphill; steep sections followed by false flats. Ouchie! The way back was mostly descending but the lousy condition of the road mixed with high speed made it a

Maison Louis Latour - It`s Friday Night!

Image
In the glass tonight is a nice 2006 Louis Latour French Pinot Noir. Delicious.I`m tempted to over indulge but the weather looks promising for a club ride tomorrow so I will resist the temptation to have another glass. An eventful night hereabouts with the vacant unit next door being "visited" by youths using it as a place to smoke dope. The tenants up and left after ransacking the place and, obviously, gave the keys out to whomever. I`ve been hearing noises lately so tonight I checked both doors and they were locked tight so the kids must have keys. Hearing noises I stepped out on the back step and scared the bejesus out of four of them as they vacated the unit. I was in the shadows and they didn`t see me until I told them to..."get their arses out of here!" Priceless! Needless to say the police soon showed up as the residents on the other side also heard noises and called the authorities. Ok......I visited the property manager and strongly suggested they get a locksm

Saturday Morning Club Ride,April Sun and Lilacs.

Image
Awoke to a glorious sunny Saturday morning. Headed out for my first Saturday club ride of 2008 and was pleasantly pleased to see we had many riders attend. By the start of the ride we had 4 groups depart on the road. My intentions were to ride with the first fast group but they had 8+ riders already so I opted for the second departing group. To facilitate the "share the road" philosophy we try and limit group sizes to 8-10 riders so the group does not become to much of an obstacle to local traffic. The second group were no wallflowers and with strong riders Kaarin, Peter, Antar, myself and a couple new members we maintained a respectable tempo. After the Fall River hill we had Eric join our group out to Laurie Park. A strong rider and all round good guy he certainly added to the capabilities of the group. Facing a head wind on the way out we had the benefit of a tailwind for the return trip. The group was hammering with an average return speed well into the 35-40+ kph range.

Friday Night Extra Stout!

Image
No I am not talking about my waistline although there is a potential causal relationship. Friday night wine has been pre-empted for a special edition of Friday Night Stout. I read somewhere that food cravings could possibly be your bodys signal that it is in need of certain nutrients. For whatever reason I have had strong desires to indulge in a Guinness Extra Stout....or two. On the way home from work I picked up a six pack but made a deal with myself that I would earn the delicious dark brew. The weather was nice today with rain forecasted for the weekend so I got on the bike and did a 50km solo ride out Kearney Lake to Kingswood, a large subdivision on Hammonds Plains road. There I enjoyed the wide streets and little traffic and did some hill intervals and riding in the drops to reaquaint the body with my road bike. On the return trip down Kearney Lake road there was a front end loader driving in the bike lane to facilitate traffic getting past. I had a full head of steam cycling

PKNT Gold Reserve and Orange Crush....

Image
....it`s Friday Night! In the glass tonight is a Chilean 2005 Reserve red wine from PKNT. " A softly structured and complex wine blended from Shiraz, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec....a rich spicy texture complimented by layers of raspberry and blackberry....American and French oak aging leading to a velvety smooth finish." I don`t have the palate or experience to understand all that other than it tastes great.Definitely a keeper. Did some work on the Nebula ITT bike. Picked up some bar tape that matches the frame paint and installed the cycling computer. The cockpit is now ready except the instalation of the arm rest pads. Next focus will be a set of tires. Looking at the Maxxis line since they have some road tires with an orange stripe. I figure they will also compliment the frame`s paint scheme and bar tape. While I was working on the bike REM`s Orange Crush keep coming to mind.....lol. Was hoping for a club ride tomorrow but the weather is looking wet. Since I p

Carianna`s Kitchen and Club Rides

My sister who lives in Brisbane has suffered from several food allergies for quite some time so has been on the hunt for recipes. It`s quite the challenge to have a diverse diet when you are limited by several allergies. Check out her blog at ....... http://cariannaskitchen.blogspot.com/ Nice work sis! I managed to get in my first group ride of 2008 on Monday. It was -9C with windchill and was a blustery day so I questioned my sanity heading out to Bedford against a stiff headwind. Once at the shop I joined up with 4 others and ended up doing a 50km ride. It was a good early season test and I must say I was happy with my fitness level. The gym work and dietary awareness this winter payed dividends. I was especially happy with my climb of the Fall River Hill.....not only did I climb it strong(for me anyway) but I was able to accelerate over the crest. Nice! My ITT bike is now ready at the shop so I`ll be picking that up soon. Now I just need someone to agree to host the Prov
