14th Annual Wolfville-Roubaix.

"Wolfville- Roubaix!! When: Sunday, April 18th @ 12 Noon Where: Juice Factory in 'downtown' Port Williams, NS. Who: All cyclists welcome for this ride. What: An 80 k ride that incorporates 85% pavement and 15% dirt road. It's hard to believe that this ride is in its 14th year! The first 30kms is ridden as a group at a very relaxed pace. After that riders proceed at their own pace, usually in smaller groups. Riders are self-supported. Quite often the dirt roads are smoother and faster than the pavement! This is a non-sanctioned, non-organized, random gathering of cyclists riding at their own risk on public roads- please obey the usual traffic laws." First event of the 2010 cycling season. I`m planning on doing it this season now that I have the "winter" beater bike.

Paleo Spring - Nutritional and Performance Update

Heading into my 3 month anniversary of my Paleo experiment I must admit that it has been a success. I`m consistantly weighing in under 200lbs,have noticed a dramatic change in my body composition, specifically around my midsection and have successfully weaned myself off of salt, processed foods, grains, legumes and dairy. That said I acknowledge the fact that my cycling may require some flexibity in regards to my diet and I may adapt some of the recommendations from Paleo Diet For Athletes once I get into the demands of the cycling season. I apply the concepts of Paleo nutrition more as a guideline rather than an absolute. In some cases it is a combination of cost, convienence and availability. As a result I do incorporate some foodstuffs that would be considered a grey area for the Paleo purists but offer substantial nutritional benefits or act as "comfort" foods. Included is the following... Lewis Mountain Sauerkraut(unpasturized)= probiotics) Canned(in olive oil/water)sea

That`s Gonna Leave A Scar!

Image
Are scars natural tattoos representing a life well lived or simply a life of misfortune? They all impart a story, be it in reference to accidents, surgeries or sporting injuries.I added to my living tapestry tonight at ball hockey. Angling off an opposing player I anticipated his slapshot and moved into his path to sweep away the ball. Unfortunately his follow through brought his stick down upon my exposed right leg and impacted with blunt force upon my soccer shin pad and sock.Hurt like a beaotch but I was able to walk it off and soon got back to the business of playing. Isn`t exercise induced endorphins a wonderful thing! It was not until after the game in the locker room that I realized I was actually cut upon my shin. The shin pad and heavy cotton soccer sock had absorbed the blood so I was unawares of the injury. Needless to say it will leave a scar and another calcium deposit upon my lower leg.Since there was very little flesh above the shin bone the cut was more like a cr

Paleo Hunting - Cloverleaf Brisling Sardines

Probably the highest quality sardines I`ve sampled these little wonders possess a delicate flavor enhanced by the extra virgin olive oil they are canned in. Extremely high in Omega 3 and a good source of calcium they are fairly low in sodium. As close to Paleo as one could get for canned fish.Very tasty but come with a pricetag.Over $3(CDN) but well worth it in terms of quality and taste.

Grill Kits and Almond Breeze

Image
Picked up a couple products recently that enhance both my car and my diet.I have used protein powder for some time in the past as part of my recovery/training and would mix it in milk. Having quit dairy I was in a bit of a quandary....how to mix up the powder? Thanks to LP and our post club ride discussion yesterday I picked up vanilla and chocolate almond milk.Made from real almonds, sugar free, low sodium and high in calcium it is the perfect lactose free dairy substitute and is excellent for protein drinks or smoothies. Not to shabby in coffee either.Paleo friendly to boot. Surfing through Ebay I discovered a grill kit for my Caliber. I`ve always been a fan of the Dodge crosshair grill and these 3M adhesive chrome moldings definitely improve the look and style while being relatively inexpensive and easy to install.Nice! Check out the before and after pics.

The 200

Friday March 12. 5:30 AM Post urination weight 199.4lbs Typical March weight - 212lbs+ I broke the 200 barrier. In winter no less. Yeah baby!

80% Solution

For years I suffered with back pain and stiffness and generally adhered to the 80% solution - if I could get 80% pain and stiffness free that was acceptable. The rest of the time I would cope with the discomfort. Being 80% normal I could still do the things I like. When my symptoms would flare up due to injury, stress or sport I would seek relief chiro to address my issues, feel better then start the whole process over again. No more. I decided I would address my issues at the root cause and, hopefully, rediscover and retrain my spine to become normal. Found a local Wellness clinic close to home(literally across the street)and had an accessment after I experienced severe neck pain and stiffness last month.Having run hill intervals on a Wednesday I awoke with some stiffness yet played ball hockey Thursday night. The following Friday I was a mess.Throbbing pain in my upper back/neck and no vertical nor lateral range of motion of my head. Traditionally it was always my lower back that wa

Cycle Commute

With my nutrition now flipped from a primarily grain(carb)based diet to a more natural one consisting of unprocessed foods;lean protein, fruits and veggies it`s time to move on to the next stage. It`s an easy one. After cycling to work in the Fall of 2009 I`m keen to make bike commuting my mode of transportation for the Spring/Summer and Fall of 2010. Not only is is faster than the transit but the climb home gives me a chance to work on my fitness. I probably have the perfect commute...mostly downhill to work but pretty much all uphill to home. The added option is that I could expand my route to add milage if I wish. Do to the unseasonably Spring like weather in early March today will be my first day taking the bike to work. Gonna use the Norco hardtail initially but may switch to the Devinci roadbike on those days I will take the long way home. I`m just a little concerned about bike security and would hate to lose my venerable Devinci to a thief. A second hand Norco that I bought for

First Official Club Ride of 2010

Hovering around -3 with windchill and dealing with gusty winds I headed out for the first official club ride of 2010. Under sunny skies about 14 hearty riders headed out to Fall River facing a wicked head/cross wind. Along the exposed sections of the Rocky Lake road it was a challenge to maintain 24kph against the brutal wind gusts. Crikey! EW had a mechanical so it was only the two of us out to Sobeys. We didn`t have the benefit nor shelter of a paceline so we just slogged it out till we reformed up with the group in Fall River. Heading out to Laurie Park was a continuation of the pain and misery brought on by the winds but KT, PD and I maintained a decent tempo till the turnaround. By this point I was pleasantly surprised how well the legs were performing and how good I felt on the bike. Might be a good sign for the coming season. At Laurie Park all riders formed up one return group with the anticipation of a swift tailwind whetting everyone`s appetite.Once back on the road the tem
