Ahead By A Century......Nope!

Unfortunately I opted out of the Joe Howe century ride today. The weather was prime for a 164km ride with warm Fall temps and sunny skies but it didn`t work out for me. A couple days ago it looked like we had a decent contingent of riders planning on participating but then folk started bailing out for one reason or another. For me the fun of the Joe Howe is riding with a steady group of cyclists with similar objectives......pacelining the distance aiming at a decent average KPH at the end. My previous JH ended with a 31.6 kph average so I was hoping we could best that this year. Alas..........by Saturday afternoon it was down to just two committed riders so I, regrettably, bowed out as well. The good news is I did manage to get out for some duathlon training. After doing a solo 50km ride around the basin with a decent average(32kph by Lake Bannook, 27.8 overall after cycling through Dartmouth and Halifax) I transitioned at home and did a 3km run. It`s that switch from cycling to runni...

Fall Back - September Club Ride

Gotta admit that the one advantage of Fall cycling is the weather. Generally dry and cool which is a good thing. Today was no exception in 14c overcast weather with just a hint of precipitation. The drawback to Fall cycling is finding time to do it. With the kids back at school(which means evening homework supervision),dusk arriving earlier every night, the start of Sunday ball hockey and Sunday school I have limited chances to ride. The result was obvious today as I suffered greatly in the first group to depart the shop. I drove to the shop fearing rain so did not get a warmup before the departure. The pace was surprisingly fast and I was unprepared for the extended jaunt through the Fall River Village subdivision which really had some bite. It was a struggle just to get up the Fall River hill and to the first stop at Sobeys. The ride out to Laurie Park was better(re;no climbs) but on the return I and two others dropped off the main pack since it increased to a dozen riders. A coupl...

Back In The Saddle....And Runners!

Image
After a fourteen day hiatus I managed to get out for a four kilometer run now that my injury is about healed. I was kinda worried that the small gains I was making would have been lost but it didn`t feel so bad tonight. I`m no speester with a 4km time of 21:15:11 but I am making progress despite my accident. The transition back to the bike was much better on the weekend when I did my first club ride in two weeks. I started out with the last group on the road but ended the ride hammering with the second group back to Bedford. The leg felt prime with no issues whatsoever and the bike fitness was still there. In hinesite perhaps the time off was well spent just taking it easy. I`m thinking the Joe Howe century ride on September 21st is back on the radar and the Riverport duathlon in early October a definite possibility if I can continue to get in some run training. The leg looks nasty but in terms of exercise there are no performance issues. Nice!
