BPCC ITT Championship

Image
The BPCC time trial series came to an end today with the club championship. The morning was perfect for the race on the 9.3 km challenging course. I assisted with the event as the holder and did the secondary timing as a backup to the laptop for the first category of riders. Thanks to Eric for hosting both the series and today`s event.

Saturday`s View From The Deck

Image
It`s an absolutely beautiful late August day hereabouts, perfect for a club ride but alas. I`m confined to sunning on the deck and watching the world pass by recouperating from my accident. It`s ok....have have a couple cold Sleemans and a cask of Merlot to keep me company while I enjoy the brilliant sunshine. At least I can attempt to blend out that silly looking cycling tan.....lol. Was hoping some of my favorite bumblebees would offer me some pictures as well as the birds and squirrels that frequent the back yard. Guess they all went to the beach.(sigh)

Dark Chocolate and Red Wine - I`m Back!

Image
The leg is feeling much better today. The cuts are still sore but the numbness and stiffness in the leg is going away. The bruising is starting to paint quite a picture.LOL. Once I get up and moving I`m good to go. No sign of infection and the healing process is well under way. Stitches won`t come out for a week so I`m gonna be in exercise withdrawal for sure. In fact I`m already starting to feel the lethargy arrive. Tomorrow I will go for a good walk and, perhaps some core work on the Swiss ball.I have some hand weights so at least I can work the upper body anyway. Till then I hunkering down with a carafe of red wine and some premium dark chocolate. I have tried to modify my calorie intake to reflect my lack of exercise but tonight it`s comfort food time...lol. If anything it will make me sleep. Monday night I couldn`t sleep much between the pain and the post accident adreneline surge. Last night I did for awhile but awoke at 4AM. My mind was racing with the "what ifs" so I...

Vuelta D`Geo - On The Disabled List

Image
Sorry folks......that good form I was exhibiting lately has taken a setback. Believe it or not I was "run" over by a outboard powered boat at Kearney lake today. Thanks to survival instinct and some serious evasive action I managed to avoid the prop except for my left quad which looks like it was clawed by a bear. I think I have at least 7 cuts ranging from my knee to my hip with two(mid quad) that were wide open and required 17 stiches to close. I had dove into the water from the dock, did two breast strokes under water and surfaced to see the bow of the boat steaming down on me about ten feet away. I instictively dove to my left and spun myself around to make sure my head and torso were away from the boat and managed to get deep enough to avoid the keel but the prop kicked me pretty hard on the leg as the boat sailed over me. Reaching down I made sure my leg was still in one piece but felt like I had gills on my quad so I knew I was cut. I swam the 20 feet to the doc...

Vuelta D`Geo - Peggy`s Cove

Image
Day two of my week off saw the morning cycling around the Peggy`s Cove loop. Under grey and ominous Halifax skies we headed out via Prospect in search of blue skies and sun. I rode with the faster of the two groups, albeit with tight legs from yesterday`s hammerfest. We reached Peggy`s Cove and found sunshine but I was still feeling Saturday`s effort in my legs. The return trip was equally intense as we in the faster group were chasing the slower group that departed earlier. We were successful in pulling them back about 6km from Tantallon. Just before the intersection and a food/fluid stop at the Irving a rider on my wheel broke a spoke. It was a shame...he was doing his first Peggy`s Cove ride and was riding well. Tough luck....hopefully his girlfriend picked him up without too much of a wait. I ended up leaving Tantallon in a smaller group of 4 riders and finished the last leg of 20km riding a decent tempo despite my sore legs and cramping quad. Guess I didn`t hydrate enough as the...

Vuelta D`Geo - Day One

Image
Started my third grand Tour...um...er...I mean vacation week of the summer of 2008. I attended the club ride today under ominous clouds anticipating a rousing 70km hammerfest. It was also the Garfield Memorial ride in memory of our clubmate who passed away on a club ride three seasons ago. His widow and son attended the pre ride memorial which was a touching addition to the solemn occasion. His son who was just a newborn at the time of his death was the image of his dad and a handsome lad. He was dressed in his father`s BPCC jersey. After the memorial service the groups departed as usual. I jumped in with the second group on the road and, despite the rain, felt good on the bike although rather concerned about the train tracks along the route. I can tell you I was pleased to get over the tracks and happy to cycle out of the downpour onto dry pavement. The legs have been feeling prime the last week as I am finally riding into mid season form. It`s a shame the BNS race schedule doesn`t...

Weekend Update - Club Hammerfest and Sambro Loop.

Image
After what seems an eternity of rain and thundershowers we finally had a decent, albeit cooler, weekend. What happened to the dog days of summer hereabouts in the Maritimes? The Saturday club ride was loads of fun as I rode with the first group and enjoyed the pace and tempo out to Laurie Park. Heading into the infamous diagonal train tracks on the Rockey Lake road I eased up somewhat as I crossed the tracks and, subsequently, got dropped as the lads hammered up the short pitch. No worries as I got in the drops and timetrialed the last couple km`s into Bedford.Averaged 34.3kph back to the shop including the solo jaunt into Bedford Another advantage of the time trial series and working on my time trial bike aero positioning is I now am much more comfortable cycling in the drops on my road bike.Nice! Sunday morning I jumped into a 50km ride around Sambro. I opted to ride with the second(slower)group that comprised of four riders. Cudoes to Cynthia and Sophie who rode strong and well w...

G`day Mate - A Canuck Goes Aussie!

Image
Yesterday I surprise showed up in the mail, a package of goodies from Down Under compliments of my sister and brother-in-law,Cari and Steve. It was a family birthday gift box with a little something for all of us. I just had to try the Bush Jerky made out of kangaroo meat. It was good, sweeter than I expected, and not as tough as beef jerky. Arnott`s Tim Tam chocolate biscuits were very good but so decadently rich. I tried one but saved them for the sweet toothed ones in the family.....Chelsea and Josh. Needless to say they didn`t last long....lol.Paton`s Macadamia chocolate covered nuts were brilliant and Monica`s favorite. Last night after the gym I decided it was time to try an Aussie staple.....vegemite. I`ve heard lots about it,most of it admittedly negative, but millions of Aussies can`t be wrong? I cracked open the jar of Kraft branded vegemite with no preconceptions. I knew that it was used as a spread on biscuits and breads so I took a Maritime Canadian staple, the saltine cra...

Geo`s Calorie Experiment - A Caloric Mystery?

It has been a dreadful rainy long weekend which has kept me off the bike so the extent of my exercise regimen has been directed towards my usual winter haunt - the gym. Saturday I managed an sixty minute high intensity spin class followed by some core work. This morning I attended another forty five minute spin followed by a mile treadmill run, machine weight training and basic compound exercises with free weights. Last night I happened to catch a news show on restaurants and how they resist placing nutritional info on the menus, specifically the amount of calories, fat and sodium content. It was quite enlightening in that we all lambast the fast food vendors but they do,for the most part, supply nutritional information to their customers. The CBC news magazine did some random samplings of menu selections from some of the big restaurant chains and found that apparently healthy selections were caloric "monsters" high in overall calories, fat and sodium. It got me to thinking and...
